Step 5

Define rules

Rules are how your world stays true to itself while the story is being told to thousands of different readers, none of whom took the same path. A Rule says: if this becomes true, then that follows. If the protagonist learns the killer's name, trust in that character should never recover. If a door gets locked, no one should later find it open without a real reason.

PARENK tracks what's happened in a story through Story Flags: signals that tell PARENK how the story has evolved. You don't need to think in code to use them - think of a flag as a fact you're marking as "now true," the way you'd dog-ear a page to remember something mattered. "The letter was found" is a flag. So is "Maya no longer trusts you."

Good Rules are strict about the few things that matter and silent about everything else. The narrator has real freedom to improvise dialogue and description - your Rules exist to protect the handful of facts your story can't survive without.
