Step 7

Define possible endings

An Experience doesn't end because the reader got tired or ran out of things to try - it ends because something true and final has happened. A mystery solved. A door reached. A choice that can't be undone. You decide what those final states are, and PARENK's rules recognize the moment a reader has actually reached one.

Give your story more than one real ending whenever the premise allows it. A reader who escaped by breaking a rule and one who escaped by trusting someone should be able to walk away with two different, equally true endings - not a single "win" state with cosmetic variations.

An ending is also a promise kept: whatever the reader did to get there should be the honest reason the story closed that way, never an arbitrary stop.
